New Gods Tabloid

This is an interesting oddity. It appeared in a 1979 Jack Kirby portfolio and is labeled as the cover for a proposed tabloid comic. Of course, there never was a New Gods tabloid comic, which is a bit of a shame. A real oversight now I come to think of it. Just imagine alongside all the Superman, Batman, and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer tabloids, there had actually been one reprinting some Fourth World material at that large size. It would have been pretty awesome stuff, and probably one of the very best tabloids ever.

On the other hand, reading the text on this piece, it’s possible Kirby was proposing a tabloid of all-new material featuring the final showdown between Orion and Darkseid that would have brought the series to an end. If that was the case, then comics lost out on a real piece of history. The “finale” of the New Gods saga when finally published in 1984, was far from perfect and undertaken by a Kirby who was far removed from the material and in the twilight of his creativity. I’m sure a tabloid edition of a the end of the war written and drawn by Kirby at the height of his powers would have been magnificent.

But, I guess we’ll never know for sure. Instead all we have is this tantalising glimpse of what might have been…
