Batman #162

Batman #162, March 1964

This issue was published just two months before Julie Schwartz was brought in as the new editor with a brief to try and save the book and the character. Look at this cover and you’ll see just why his presence was so necessary! Now I love this stuff, and the late-50s/early-60s Batman material is a real favourite, but it’s just plain wrong. Had Schwartz failed to generate renewed interest, then there was a real possiblility that both Batman and Detective Comics would have been cancelled. Sounds ludicrous today, but there we are. How times change.
