Aquaman #48, December 1969

Nick Cardy strikes again! Another masterclass of cover design from DC’s main cover artist of the early-1970s. The darkened cave walls frame the figures, drawing the eye of the viewer into the action. What’s happened to Aquagirl, will Aquaman save her? Meanwhile, a second level of sell is provided by the mean-looking characters hiding in the gloom. How could anyone resist this?

Y’know, drawing a figure from that angle and with that degree of foreshortening is tough — yet Cardy makes it look easy!
