I’ve always loved this panel…

Bats goes shopping

The idea of Batman wandering around the shops looking for a gift for Superman is just wonderful. You can just see him pushing a trolley around Wal-Mart, can’t you? I especially love the people hanging around in the background seemingly finding absolutely nothing remarkable about a body-stocking clad masked bloke parading up and down the aisles looking for the perfect present. There’s also the helpful sign proclaiming that this is a “good gift”, so Batman knows he’s got it right.

The Caped Crusader then goes and hides himself inside a giant key just to fool Superman. Oh, the jolly japes super-heroes got up to back then. It was a much simpler time.

cover to Action Comics #241

From Action Comics #241, 1958. The start of the Weisinger era proper, generally regarded as the first appearance of the Silver Age Superman, and a taste of the glories to come! This is a comic hard to beat.
