Ah, silly putty. Do they still make this stuff I wonder? I remember it being cold and peculiarly moist to the touch. And pink. In addition to being able to mold it into whatever shape you wished, its other big selling point — as suggested here — was that if you pressed it onto newsprint, such as what comics were printed on back then, the image would transfer onto the silly putty. Quite what use a mirror image of said newsprint source was I’m not sure, but it seemed like fun at the time. We were much poorer and had to make our own entertainment in those days….

Naturally enough, after relatively few pressings, the silly putty turned a murky shade of grey, so you simply had no choice other than to pester your mother into buying you a new batch. Great marketing ploy actually.
