“…And there came a time when the old gods died…”

Action Comics Weekly #638, 1989

This cover, featuring Etrigan the Demon, was just about Jack Kirby’s last work in comics. There were a few bits and pieces published later, but much of that — if not all — was from old files. Kirby was well into his seventies and retired by this time, and ailing. To see his pencil art from late in his career is a painful experience, though clearly not as painful as that experienced by Kirby as he struggled with ill health to keep producing. I suspect this piece looked a lot rougher in pencil form, but inker extraordinaire Terry Austin has pulled it all together nicely, and done the King proud. It’s a great image and a fine swansong.
