Aquaman #42, December 1968

Sublime cover by the inimitable Nick Cardy. Probably designed by Carmine Infantino who was experimenting with wild layouts — around the same time he was responsible for a similar, logo-challenging¬† Batman cover.

By this point Cardy was — very controversially, going by the angry correspondence on the letters pages — no longer responsible for the interior art on Aquaman. Though his work continued to grace every cover right to the end of the run, his place inside was taken by a young Jim Aparo. In order to ease the transistion, Aparo had to ape Cardy’s style — with mixed results.
