The Atom #34, January 1968

Beautiful. A masterpiece from the pencil of Gil Kane, this time out inked by the inimitable Murphy Anderson. An unusual combination, to be sure, but one that works superbly. Look at that anatomy: a masterclass in the foreshortened construction of a heroic body. Kane was a brilliant draftsman, his figures twisting and turning in all kinds of dynamic poses. They almost appear to move on the page! Unsympathetic inking could ruin Kane, but when the pairing worked — as it so clearly does here — magic was created.

In later days Kane often inked himself, with lovely results — though not to everyone’s taste.
