Superman Special #1

Superman Special #1, 1983

A Gil Kane masterpiece. This is from my absolute favourite period of Kane’s career. In the early-1980s he began to ink his own pencils using felt tip pens and the results were startling. He did a couple of these Superman Specials and also drew the third DC Comics Presents Annual in similar style. The pinacle of this phase was possibly Kane’s Sword of the Atom, which reimagined DC’s diminutive hero as a kind of sword ‘n’ sorcery hero. The ink-heavy, muscular art really suited the new direction, and it’s a series worth seeking out.

Recently, this Superman cover was modeled in 3D and offered for sale as a statue.
