I’ve been looking at a lot of Frank Frazetta’s art of late. The great man started out as a comics artist before moving into newspaper strips and, most famously, fantasy art. His paintings are truly spectacular. No one paints like he does, though he’s often been copied. Many of his compositions have become so familiar in the work of others that they’ve almost become cliches. Frazetta’s work though remains vital. Three volumes of his work have been published over the last decade or so, and they’re all beautiful. Many example of his paintings are reproduced as full page illustrations, and there are examples of his strip work. All work is annotated, presenting a history of the man and his work.

Frank Frazetta: Icon, Legacy, and Testament are all worth a look for any fan of fantasy art, or the comics form.
