This comic strip made me cry.

I think I’m man enough to admit that.

“Leah” is a short strip published as a back-up in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Annual #1. Written by Peter David and drawn by Colleen Doran, it’s an emotional tour-de-force. Thematically similar to “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man”, it encapsulates in a few short pages the very essence of what it is to be a fan, the longed-for dream, and a wish fulfilled.

Produced as a tribute to the late Leah Adezio, the story is all-but word-free. Colleen’s art carries the strip and is completely successful at conveying the emotional journey the story tells. In these days of hyperbole and multi-issue story arcs, it’s good to be reminded that sometimes less is more.

It is, quite simply, one of the best comics I’ve read in many a year.
