Marvel ads mid-70s
From Giant-Size Man-Thing #1 (August 1974) comes this ad for an eclectic host of Marvel titles. DC tended to do this kind of thing better, but Marvel could give it the old college try on occasion. Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu was a magazine that aimed to capitalize on the then-popular martial arts fad fueled by Bruce Lee and the David Carradine TV show Kung-Fu. Shang Chi, the Master of Kung-Fu was the major draw, but all of Marvel’s martial arts heroes wandered through the book at times, from Iron Fist to Sons of the Tiger.

Man-Wolf, as hinted here, was in reality Spider-Man’s bete noir J Jonah Jameson’s son, John, transformed into a werewolf by the mystical Godstone. While Monsters of the Movies was a magazine that did no more, nor less, than it said on the tin.

So, a bit of mixed bag, but that was pretty much true of the decade as a whole…
