Sea Devils #30, July-August 1966

No, your eyes do not deceive you. This is indeed a cover that shows our group of heroic frogmen battling against an undersea gorilla. An. Undersea. Gorilla.

Truly was DC the King of the Silver Age.

Drawn by Howard Purcell, this is another of the ‘grey-tone’ covers DC published a lot of during the 50s and 60s. Many issues of the Sea Devils, especially, have this kind of cover. The basic technique was to have DC production head, Jack Adler, watercolour over a tonal pencil drawing. They don’t scan particularly well, but in the flesh they have a translucent quality and look quite striking.
