Pre-e-e-esenting, ladies and gentlemen, perhaps THE finest cover of ALL TIME:

Lois Lane #29

Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane #29, November 1961.

Really, what more needs to be said about this little masterpiece? Just fabulous.

Back in the 1950s, in his infamous comic industry hatchet job, Seduction of the Innocent, Frederic Wertham would’ve had us believe that the super-hero—specifically super-heroes of the Batman and Robin variety anyway—is a thinly-veiled metaphor for homosexuality. That utter nonsense is given the big, fat lie here as that very same Dark Knight detective, Aquaman and Green Arrow all line up for smootchies with our favourite gal reporter, Lois Lane. Meanwhile, a blonde (!) Lana lang can only look on in jealous fury.

You have to love Ollie politely tapping Arthur’s shoulder in true, old-fashioned gentleman’s excuse me style. Meanwhile Lois’s leg is bent backwards in that time-honoured expression of romantic longing fulfilled…

The sublime Curt Swan drew it folks. And I love it. They don’t get much better than this.
