It’s possible that the late-70s was the last great era for adverts. They tended to get a bit samey and generic through the 80s — though perhaps it’s just my age talking. Things always look sweeter through the rose-tinted spectacles of nostalgia.

Still, I loved this kind of thing when I was a kid. Tremendously exciting and a tantalising promise of comics you were never likely to see: I’m not sure any of these three titles were distributed on these shores. Come to think of it, I do recall owning a late issue of Freedom Fighters, but nothing this early.

Big news here I guess is the Return of the New Gods. Kirby’s Fourth World finally given a second shot at the big time, a whole year after the initial try-out in the final issue of First Issue Special. While that particular comic was rather poor, the proper run (consisting Return of the New Gods #12-19) was fairly solid entertainment. With story by Gerry Conway and great art from the underrated Don Newton, it provided a finale of sorts to the God-War. You’ll be unsurprised to hear that it was soon retconned — or ignored.
