Our Army at War #128

Our Army at War #128, March 1963

Artistically — not to mention commercially — speaking, this is an amazingly brave cover composition. Joe Kubert disregards the prevailing trend to feature a bold, central image of the lead character, easily-identifiable to the potential reader, in favour of this striking image of a pair of seemingly disembodied arms wrestling with a gun.

Just goes to show that, on occasion, far from being all stodgy and ludicrous (albeit wonderfully, enjoyably so), Silver Age DC could innovate. It’s difficult to imagine a comics company trying something similar on a cover today.
