The Great Charlton Comics

I don’t know about you, but Charlton really isn’t fooling me with this ad. “The Great One” is not normally a phrase used in conjunction with a mention of the Connecticut publisher. Still, full marks for giving it a try I suppose.

Far more worthy of Great One status was the King, Jack Kirby. And a couple of years prior to Charlton’s effort, his arrival at DC was heralded with that familiar slogan:

Kirby: the Great One ad

Now that’s much more like it! Where Charlton had Billy the Kid, DC gave us Serifan and a Boom Tube. “So powerful in concept—it’s almost terrifying!” indeed. What’s that you say? Just imagine Charlton came up with the notion of a time-travelling cowboy…?

Well, funny you should mention that…
