The Spirit #4

The Spirit was Will Eisner’s signature creation and ran weekly in newspapers from 1940 to 1952. It’s held in extremely high regard — quite rightly! — and was one of the most influential comics ever done. Many of the innovations Eisner introduced are today standard practice for comics.

Eisner himself sadly died a few years ago, but this new take on the Spirit, published by DC Comics, is written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke. Cooke was previously responsible for the quite brilliant DC: The New Frontier, and The Spirit is one of the best things being published to day. The stories are genuinely entertaining with rich characterisation and interesting situations, while Cooke’s art is the work of a comics master. This guy knows how to draw comics, and his pages are a joy to behold. Eisner would be proud his creation is in such safe hands.
