I’ve just picked up the latest Marvel Masterworks volume that reprints the orignal early-1970s Power of Warlock series. Looking through these pages really makes you remember what a fine talent Gil Kane was. Every panel is a masterclass in heroic anatomy; Kane really knew his stuff, and by that time was a 30-year veteran of the comics medium. If pressed, I’d probably say that Kane was the greatest super-hero artist of all. Kirby had more power and Garcia-Lopez is more polished, but Kane really understood what super-heroics is all about: dynamism and movement. Sure, he’s a little rough around the edges every now and then, and clearly was often in a rush to get finished, but that all adds to the experience!
